Do you ever have a string of events that make you wonder if you should have even removed your body from bed???? I have to say, yesterday and today had some pretty frustrating events but I learned a great lesson from them. Here is how it all started:
Friday night I knew that Nathaniel was feeling bad. I asked David to bring home some Advil for him and I began the "home medication" treatments for what I thought was a mixture of teething and growing pains. Oh how wrong I was! Saturday was a bit of a struggle but by the time we got to Sunday I knew the poor little fellow needed to go to the doctor for additional help. We went to the extra weekend hours at our doctor's office and saw a doctor who was clearly flustered by the new computer system the office was using. It seems that 3 weeks ago the entire staff went from paper charts to computerized EVERYTHING. I don't know if the staff was trained at all but everyone seemed to be lost. The nurse had to write his weight and temp on her hand so she could go out and ask where to type them. The doctor had to "finish the chart later" cause he needed help with the ending part. While I'm not one to question these people in their diagnosis I was beginning to feel that maybe Bubba was not in the best hands he could be in for that day. At any rate I trusted the doctor and followed his instructions to "go to Walmart and pick up the prescription that he just faxed in". I verified that it was the location near my home and he said yes. Ok, easy enough!
We left the office and I decided to take Bubba home first so that I didn't have to put him in the middle of a busy Walmart only a couple weekends before Christmas. By the time I reached the Pharmacy it was closing and I was informed that the prescription was NOT there. What??? I watched him send the fax??? I asked if there was an over the counter option until I was able to call the doctor and get a new order sent in. They instructed me that there was not a good substitute and that I needed to contact the after hours person and have them call in an order to a 24 hour pharmacy. OK, I turned and went home. At this point I had a mild level of frustration brewing inside me but nothing too severe. I called the doctor, got the order placed and purchased the meds. No big deal.
WElllllll, over night Bubba took a turn for the worse. Clearly the little guy was in pain. I decided that we needed to go back to the doctor as other symptoms began to pop up (including not drinking which always worries me). We got an emergency appointment and returned to the scene of the chaos. In 2 hours all we got was a flustered doctor who had to have the help of 3 nurses to even type in his diagnosis (which he failed to relay onto me!) and another faxed prescription. When I asked what pharmacy it was going to everyone became all flustered as if I had asked for a million dollars. Eventually, they figured out that our records stated that we shopped at the Port St Lucie Walmart, which is 3 cities north of where we live. We do not shop there. I agreed to pick up the meds there when I saw their look at attempting to change the location in the computer and have it resent to the correct place. They told me how to get there and thanked me up and down for not making them change the orders. Not a big deal, just so long as my little man gets the meds he needs and feels better. We packed up in the car and began our drive to pick up the meds when lo and behold the phone rang. It was Walmart calling to inform me that the medicine faxed in was no longer on the market and they could not reach the doctor to get a new order. ARE YOU SERIOUS?????? So I turned around and decided to give up for the day, stop and get food for everyone and call it a night.
We stopped at Chick-fil-a, which is normally a great treat, and ordered the food. When I got to the window I realized they had gotten the order wrong and so I corrected them. I guess somewhere between the register and the bag someone didn't read the update cause when we got home MY FOOD WASN'T IN THE BAG. Totally frustrated and completely hungry I am now sitting here with a hunger headache but too tried to fix myself anything. I have a sick kiddo with no meds and a little man who is trying to be as good as he can be but who is, after all, only 3 years old so how much can you really expect out of him?
So what is the lesson I learned? Well, always check your bag at the drive thru window to make sure that you have what you ordered but more importantly, WHEN YOU SEE A FLUSTERED DOCTOR RUN!!!! Chances are you are going to do a better job than him that day so try back another day. And that's about it folks. No funny stories tonight, no recipes for easy meals, just little old me, my adorable 3 year old wearing reindeer pj's and my sick little little man wearing his sock monkey pj's. Here is hoping that your night is a little better than mine and here is hoping that my tomorrow is better than my today! (oh did I also mention that I'm still very thankful that Bubba isn't throwing up since we STILL don't have a washing machine?) But that is a story for another day. Sweet dreams everyone!
